Below is a list of all equines that are currently available for adoption at Segunda Vida Equine Rescue. If you are interested in any of the horses, please fill out our adoption application or you can contact us for further information and pictures.
While the horses await their forever home, we offer them up for foster or off-site free lease. This enables the rescue to use the space to help another equine in need. If you are looking for a "first" horse or to get back in the saddle after a few years and jumping into owning is a little scary why not look at free leasing or fostering. If we have a horse at the rescue that you feel may be a 'fit' for you, then this is a great option and everyone involved gets something out of it. You have a horse without the commitment of owning, the horse is being ridden and is happy to have a job and it frees a spot for us to save one more horse.
Please contact the Rescue for any further information about adoption, free lease or fostering.
Any information that Segunda Vida Equine Rescue is able to gather on any of the equines at our farm or sponsor farm(s) is sometimes limited. Horses and ponies that are surrendered will have more information about them in their previous home(s), whereas horses or ponies that are saved from feedlot or auction rarely come with any more information than their name, gender and sometimes an approximate age.
We also share any information that we have learned, from daily handling and interacting with the horses or ponies, with you so that you can more accurately decide if the equine you are interested in may be right for you and any future plans you might have for your new equine friend.
All horses and ponies being adopted through our rescue come with a contract and are microchipped to ensure their identity and safety.
If you have any questions regarding the rescue or an equine, please send us an e-mail with your phone number so we may respond to your enquiry promptly.
Shelby is an 11-year old Appaloosa/Welsh pony cross, she is 13.2-13.3hh, Shelby is a stunning pony.
As the summer comes to an end, we have reassessed Shelby and find that she no longer matches her previous description. Shelby does love attention and loves to be ridden, she enjoys it though she is sore after and needs some time to rest.
Shelby we believe was used as a show pony probably pushed to much and most likely too soon as she suffers from arthritis. When ridden she just wants to go and go. If Shelby is ridden she should be ridden by a smaller experienced rider. We feel that Shelby would be best suited in a companion setting with very light minimal riding. The occasional hack or trail. Shelby's rider should be confident and experienced as she is not a beginner horse. Shelby would benefit from Bute after a good ride and some time off between rides. Shelby has only been ridden very casually this year and likes a job or a purpose. Shelby is an easy keeper as she lives outdoors 24/7 in a medium size herd, she does very well and is more towards the bottom of the pecking order. Shelby has no vices.
Shelby is available for adoption with an approved adoption application and a donation to the Rescue. If you would like further information on Shelby please contact the us.
Chico is a 14-year old Canadian Stallion available for adoption. Chico is broke to drive and ride. He is currently at our foster farm awaiting his forever home. Chico has been ridden throughout the seasons and is road safe. This big boy is a stallion but you would never know it.
Chico is currently living outdoors 24/7 with 4 yearlings colts, a Shetland pony and a small herd of cows. He does extremely well with geldings or the young ones, he does not bully or run any of the colts or the pony and is very tolerant. Chico was previously out with a gelding and would do well just about anywhere as long as there are no mares in close proximity. Chico has impeccable manners.
Chico is a very friendly guy and likes men, women and children. He will require an experienced rider and someone who understands stallion behaviors, although he is not aggressive, mean or "studish"in any way.
Chico has been used as a stud and due to his age it is not recommended that Chico be gelded as his chances of bleeding out during the procedure are greater than 50%.
Chico is available for adoption for $1000 CDN
Please inquire for further information about Chico
Our boys were approximately 4-5 months old when we rescued them from auction, the product of nurse mares (bred, born and discarded so "better" foals can be cared for by their mothers).
They were well handled by us each and everyday before they were relocated to one of our foster farms. They are doing well in a small herd of other colts, a stallion, a Shetland pony and a small herd of cows. These boys were rescued from auction together and have spent everyday together since. They are now yearlings and are doing well.
Yogi the taller of the two has a blind spot in his right eye, which does not hinder him in any way and Boo Boo the smaller one was thought to be a pony cross, but after having a vet assess him and do some blood work, it is believed that he was starved while in utero and weaned way too early. Boo Boo will always be on the small side because of his start at life, but we refuse to allow that to be a reason for him to have a safe forever home full of care and love.
Because these special boys are the products of Nurse Mares we will never know their history before we rescued them, we will never know their breeding or why Boo Boo is stunted. Both Yogi and Boo Boo can make someone very happy given the time, patience and understanding while they learn, train and grow. Boo Boo will require a blanket in the winter, he could benefit from grain or extra feed and possibly a stall in the harsher winter weather.
We recently visited the foster farm and visited our boys, who are doing amazing living outdoors with a small herd and share the paddock with a small herd of cows as well. Yogi was a complete puppy dog, following us around trying to take all our attention, he was licking our shirts and nibbling on our pants, such a sweetheart. Boo Boo was a bit shy, but after we were in the paddock for about 15-20 minutes he approached for some soft pats and a nice scratch.
Yogi and Boo Boo's adoption fee is $375 CDN each
If you can offer both these sweethearts a forever home their adoption fee together is $600 CDN
Please inquire for further information about Yogi and Boo Boo. The picture below is of Boo Boo, September 2013.
Bam Bam is a 10-year old, 16.1hh solid chestnut (more sorrel) gelding.
Bam Bam is a Suffolk Punch which is a rare breed of horse that is listed as critical on the UK Rare Breeds Survival Trust and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. You can read more about Suffolk's here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffolk_Punch
Bam Bam was rescued from a feedlot, he was Mennonite owned prior to being sent to auction. He is broke to pull.
Bam Bam needs a firm but gentle hand who understands heavies. Bam Bam lives outside 24/7 in a mixed herd and has nice thick winter coat. No grain, hay only.
Bam Bam would benefit from routine/consistent handling and lots of ground work.
A knowledgeable and experienced home is a must.
Bam Bam's adoption fee is: $900.00 CDN
Hellaga - Helena
Helena is an 8-year old, 15.2hh registered (no papers) Thoroughbred mare. She was a NYNE feedlot rescue.
She is a beautiful chestnut with a white star and two white socks on her hind legs.
Helena had just weaned her second foal in 24 months and was recovering from a bowed tendon (front left) when she was rescued. She was slightly underweight.
Helena is race broke. she has not had an assessment ride as no indoor arena at current site.
Helena has a stall and does well in a mixed group during turnout.
Helena's weight is no longer an issue and she is ready for her forever home.

Helena's adoption fee is: $600.00 CDN
Penelope is a 4-year old Paint mare.
She is approximately 15.3hh. Penelope is up to date on everything; she will require vaccinations in the summer.
Penelope is green broke, but will have to be restarted as something happened to her in her past. She is very curious, but shy.
It took her owners a while to gain her confidence and for her to allow them to touch her.
Penelope is good for the farrier
Penelope is available for adoption, she is not owned by the Rescue. If you are interested in Penelope we will be happy to put you into contact with her owner.
Magic is a 17-year old registered Quarter Horse mare. She stands 15hh and she is very well broke and she can neck rein. Magic was a school horse eight years ago.
Magic is not a slow horse, she has a quick pace. She is very good to handle and is up to date on everything, she will require her vaccinations in the summer.
Magic's owner has her papers with a signed transfer.
Magic is available for adoption, she is not owned by the Rescue. If you are interested in Magic we will be happy to put you into contact with magic's owner.
McLovin is an 11-year old racing Quarter Horse.
He stands 14.3hh and is a beautiful solid chestnut. He is broke to ride and is up to date on everything, he will require his vaccinations in the summer.
McLovin is a little shy, not mean and is good to handle once he knows you.
McLovin is available for adoption. He is not owned by the Rescue and should you be interested in McLovin we will be happy to place you in contact with his owner.
Hunter is a Belgian, 16.1hh and is need of a loving forever home. Hunter came to his current owner very distrustful of humans and was not sure how to completely trust them. She gave Hunter the love, time and patience he needed and he now is a more happy and willing soul.
Hunter is a little chunky at the moment as she hasn't had the time to keep working him, but he is a very smart horse and has a great memory and picks things up quickly.
Hunter's only issue is that he bolts when on his back. He is believed to be a previous Mennonite horse and whoever had him left him with a memory, but he is amazing with groundwork, he follows you, lunges great. You can throw tack on him and he will stand patient, even at the mounting block or without the mounting block.
His current owner likes to make everything a little more dramatic and extreme that way he isn't frightened.
He is great with the farrier (almost looks like he loves it) and he adores being groomed.
He needs a strong, experienced and confident individual rider, that way when he is thinking of bolting that individual can work him through it so he understands that it's okay. He has a great amount of potential with the right owner to be patient, kind and show him the way.
Please contact Segunda Vida if you are interested in Hunter.
** Flower is currently unavailable as she is on a trial Lease and we are hopeful that her leaser will become her adopter.**
Flower is a beautifully bred 5-year old thoroughbred mare, with impressive lineage and is a OTTB chestnut with a white star and one hind sock.
She shares the same sire as the 2012 Kentucky Derby winner "I'll Have Another". She was another rescue horse that was bailed out of a slaughter bound feedlot. With her quarantine time and riding assessment completed, she is awaiting her forever home.
Flower would make a lovely hunter or western gaming horse with her athleticism and willingness to work. Flower does require some retraining as she is a former racing mare but is a quick learner who has a very impressive and smooth extended trot. She is being ridden 1-2 x/week and has shown a definite interest in jumping...very green but very willing to learn...
Please contact the Rescue for more information or pictures.
Flower's adoption price is $750.00 CDN
